A Week in West Michigan 1

The first of a series of photo posts, centered around West Michigan in the United States. This week, I went swing dancing in Grand Rapids, MI, and I went to John Ball Zoo there as well. Photos further in the post.

Welcome, null

Walmart Null

Walmart Null

Seriously Walmart- I am insulted. I am not “null”, nor do I even have an account at your website, but you regard me as such anyway. Die.

Seriously, get a fix on your site.

iPhone Mass Storage

I’ve seen this question, or request many of times among iPhone users- Especially those that have used the older iPods. “Where is the mass storage function?” or “Why doesn’t the iPhone offer access to the hard drive?”

I get sick and tired of these questions, especially since the answer is pretty simple. The reason why we lack this feature is because we don’t have Mac users AND Windows users using the device. “How does that have anything to do with this”, one might ask. The answer is simple, as it has been noted time and time again, the iPhone runs a variant of OS X, though much slimmed down and limited, it still makes use of the HFS/HFS+ file system.

Due to this, any mass storage functions would be limited only to computers running OS X, or another OS that has a method to access the HFS/HFS+ filesystem. By default, this is not Windows. Since the iPhone runs a slimmed down version of OS X, it must use the HFS/HFS+ filesystem, so reformatting it for Windows like older iPods won’t have a positive effect.

Why don’t they make it accessible to only Macs then? It’s only fair, and to avoid possible anti-competitive trade issues.

Midsummer

It’s now around that time, midsummer. That means a little over one month till Orientation and the start of school.

Recently, I picked up Neverwinter Nights 2 Gold, and had a blast. I’m considering buying Stirms fo Zehir, and Mysteries of Westgate.

3.5E forever.

Windows Developers and the iPhone

Every once in a while, I see a Windows developer (or a teenager looking to use Windows and develop for the iPhone/iPod) making a fuss about how you need an Intel Mac to develop for the AppStore/SDK. Some even accuse Apple of anti-competitive practices by doing this.

However, here’s a wake up call for them. Windows Mobile development isn’t available for Macs. No Xbox development tools are available on Mac. Hmm…

HP vs. The Big World

Moving on in life, radical changes are made.

I’ve watched many old friends graduate from highschool only to return stuck up, believing that they’re somehow “above” Holland, MI. I DO NOT want this to be me. I love this town and the people in it. So this is my way of ensuring I don’t leave behind all those great people who inhabit it.

The mighty words of a good man, Alexander Bush, known to some as Shadow, others as Alex, and many more as “HP”. To commemorate his leaving of this grand city/town/backwater, he started a blog, HP vs. Big World to keep in contact with those that he knows and loves.

So here’s a shout out to him, ENJOY YOUR NEW LIFE. Never forget that I was one of the very few Holland Asians that you knew.

Check him out too, guys.

Touchscreens are the future

Touchscreens arethe future of computers, whether portable or stationary. It’s a simple conclusion, especially now that physical keyboards are insecure.

In a world where someone can figure out what one is typing through the air -Not through mediums such as 802.11x or Bluetooth, but from signals that keyboards give off; the touchscreen is the next evolution of the input device.

One device for input that can be programmer to handle any language, key layout, and image format- Far more versatile than a standard keyboard.

The Developer Within

Lately, I’ve been thinking of starting a Development team, a local one instead of a internet based one. I’m going to be headed off to college, as a Computer Science major, so I want to get involve in something more relevant to my amjor than watching anime and playin games.

There are probably a few issues to this. I may have trouble finding other individuals interested, and I have incredibly limited experience and release history. I haven’t gotten myself to do much with Mac or iPhone development, but I’m sure that this may give me more motivation.

Will it work out? I can’t say yes, but if Mat Nguyen of Worksighted could do it with IT, I’m sure it is possible to innovate with software development.

Summer daze

The following is an emoji enabled post. You may need a emoji-enabled iPhone, or other SoftBank phone to view it correctly.

 Summer, a time of fun and relaxation for some, and for others: A season of utter agony.

One of the things I hate about summers is being at the beach with my family -My extended family, that is. Populated by younger children, and seasoned with the hot, intense gaze of the sun, the summer beaches have become a haven of boredom. Especially since the cellphone reception here flucates between one bar to zero. 

iPhone 3GS

Apple has introduced the iPhone 3GS, the latest in the Cupertino-based company’s iPod/Phone hybrid lineup. The S in the name stands for Speed- As evident in the 600MHz processor and the 256MB of ram. Unlike many other products in this time period, this new iPhone delivers: Applications run faster, and the overall UI is smoother and more responsive.

The quality of the camera, and the video recording features are some of the biggest reasons to pick up this device- I had considered picking up a HTC G1, as either a developer device from Google, or a locked phone from T-Mobile. However there was a turn of events when the SAAD (Suddenly Acquired Apple Device, based off of Danny Choo’s SAFs) appeared in my room after coming back home on a Sunday. This is the device that rekindled my love of the iPhone.
